Special THANK YOU to DGM33 for letting us borrow his Shield for the photo shoot.

Photographing the M&P Shield has really made me reconsider what I carry daily, which has been the S&W M&P 9 compact. When I am not carrying the 9c, I carry the Sig Sauer P238 Equinox in my pocket. This author thought it would be fun to compare the three guns using photography. It is not often that I consider changing carry guns because it requires getting used to a new gun, which takes a lot of time, energy, training and money to use it effectively. I would equate it to test driving a new car, it just feels weird when you first get behind the wheel.

The Shield is hot right now and for good reason. For the money, it is one of the smallest, most affordable sub-compact 9mm’s on the market. I see one in my future… Now for the porn.

That's some great work.

The P238 is a thing of beauty in the Equinox finish...and that comparison is great for me...I have a shield, and I'm considering a 238.

Which sights are on that Shield, and did you get a chance to test drive them?

IMHO neither is small enough for pocket carry atleast in my pockets, If I have to holster carry I will stay with my 9C with greater capacity + being able to use 17rounders for even more if I so choose.

The only place S&W missed on the Shield is the grip length. It should be as short as the 9c. They could have made an extended mag like the 9c has. I don't understand why they did that. The grip is what makes it too big for pocket carry. Even with the 7 round mag, it is too long. No, if I am going to have carry it in a holster anyways, I'll take the extra rounds of the 9c/40c over the Shield.

+1 here to. I was going to get a shield until I compared them. Ill take the extra rounds of the compact. If I want to carry something smaller Ill carry my thunder 380. But for the most part Ill carry the 9c. Thanks for sharing the photos it gives a good comparison of the two guns.

It is wearing a set of Trijicon night sights. I have not shot the Shield yet. I am waiting for the new CORE and will test them all together for a better comparison.

For me, a big difference is that I can fit the Shield in my pocket...I had intended it as a nice, slim OWB, but discovered that it fits just fine in the pants I tend to wear every day.

I agree, I have no interest in pocket carry and this is largely why I cancelled my Shield order and got a 9c. Although the 9c is larger in most dimensions and is 5oz heavier, it is still very light for the capacity. I carry mine with the flat base 12 round mag and keep a 17 round with an X Grip in my center console. Also, shooting with the full size mag and X Grip on the range is a lot of fun, very little recoil even for 9mm.

5.11 Covert Khakis (original version). I picked up a bunch in all colors when everyone was clearing them out, and they have good size pockets with integrated magazine holders...and they look like typical khakis. I'm also 6'3" and 175ish pounds, so my size may play into it, but they DO fit, while the compact doesn't.

Don't care for the shield, held one put it back. I prefer the thicker grip on my MP9C and have no problems trying to conceal it either. Plus it holds more rounds and if I want a 17rd mag slips in just nicely...Eric
