Richard Nixon Contemplated A Total Handgun Ban

1467 Views 24 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  Hopyard
Few presidents in modern times have been as interested in gun control as Richard Nixon, of all people. He proposed ridding the market of Saturday night specials, contemplated banning handguns altogether and refused to pander to gun owners by feigning interest in their weapons.

But most of his(Nixon) comments on the tapes, available at the websites of the National Archives and of the University of Virginia's Miller Center, were in favor of stronger gun control.

Interesting that this forty-year-old piece of non-news has suddenly found its way to the headlines.

The ghost of Nixon holds the puppet strings of the entire GOP, Reagan spells him when he tires of pulling the strings... or not.
The best thing about Nixon is that he makes my two favorite Republican presidents, Grant and Harding look not quite so bad.
Nixon was a criminal...proof that criminal prefer unarmed victims

.....

We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the law breaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is responsible for his actions....Ronald Reagan
Well they have to use what they can to push the agenda. Oh yeah lets not forget that Nixon was a crook and a criminal. Just saying. As for Reagan, he was about the most Democratic Republican there is but he was there doing good stuff for the country at the time. I shall give him a pass for now.

Christie is much more of a Democrat than Reagan, but wait, he isn't president yet. Keeping it on topic, he doesn't much like guns, either.

Hey anyone that has to keep saying that is probably a crook. Just saying.
I'm not going to defend Nixon because wrong is wrong. However, if the media took even a modicum of interest in the current administration, aside from slobbering on his leg, I think it would make Nixon (even Clinton for that matter) look like a choir boy. The media has it's own "Don't ask, don't tell" policy going on.

Anyone heard from Woodward in the past few days or is his body floating in the Potomac?

Here's how the headline should read:

'Holy Cow! Even A Republican Supports Gun Control!!!!"

That's what they're basically saying. And of course, we're all stupid enough to fall for it.

Yeah, one that was impeached and thrown out of office.
Yeah, one that was impeached and thrown out of office.
Actually, not true. He resigned under pending impeachment proceedings.

Bill Clinton was the one who had the gall to actually go through the impeachment proceedings and refuse to resign.

One takes the honorable path and is a zero. The other lies and belligerently ignores, and is the hero.
Okay so a non-news story about a dead president is what the media is running now......

So what are the distracting you from?

Very true! But that is partly why Mitt was the best we could muster in the last election and is on course to do even worse in the next election.

Yes, I stand corrected. He resigned before he was thrown out.
I don’t think anyone considers Nixon to have been a good president in any way. Other bad ideas include the War on Drugs and inflation. Also the EPA, the one thing I agree with him on.
