road rage opinions good and bad

ok so last Friday I picked up my young kids for my weekend....driving to my house. and I basically drive for a living and get cut off, pulled in front of and yea I see a lot of stupid stuff on the road, if nothing gets bent or no one gets injured i really dont care, to me its not worth getting mad over, it just doesn't matter, Im pretty calm. perhaps im a puss becasue I wont fight over dumb driving i dont know.

So I am approaching an intersection going north 2 lanes each way to 2 lanes each way, my light was green made a right, another driver approaching from the opposite way south made a left at the same time i made my right. I like nascar so I may have gone a bit wide on my turn. In my mind I had the right of way(opinions?)So then the other driver pulls up along sideme ( he is driving a truck I have a car) comes into my lane trying to force me off the road pulls up and makes some angry hand gestures, I give him the sorry sign, im in the right lane, he then cuts in front of me and slams on his brakes, I stop, the traffic is heavy ( friday at 5 o clock) I cant get to the middle lane to drive away. He gets out of the truck and starts walking back to my car. im thinking what the whats up with this guy? II can see both hands and there is nothing in them....so now im thinking what to do.....traffic is now backed up and I suppose I could have driven on the grass to the right, my kids are in the car , do I pull out my gun? do I open the door get behind it draw my gun and start yelling get back in your truck po lice style? so he walked up to the car, I left it in drive and turned the wheel to the right just in case he reached in and stared punching me so i could go out in traffic and squish the puncher , i rolled down the window and said "whats up dude?' I said I had the right of way

I think he saw that i had my kids in the car and backed off no confrontation no yelling just ended

This was the fist time in a long time I thought about using the gun... I think in this case it would have definatley complicated things

and tinley park guy in the black truck if your are reading thisi am glad we didnt have to shoot each other

Re read what I left from your quote. IMHO, that is all that matters. You reacted perfectly. Only thing I would have done different would be to leave the window just cracked and gun hidden in my hand, while praying for the same outcome. Had he broke the window it would have proved aggression. There is no cowardice in staying reasonable and justified. (Not a wuss)

Good handling of the situation. Glad you and the kids are safe.
You could also have called 911 and given them his liscense plate. Bet it's not the first time he went off on someone, or the last.

You handled the situation very well. There is nothing that you can do about a "bucket head" like that guy. He is going to pull that stunt on the wrong guy and get his butt busted. Just keep driving defensively. The advice on not rolling down your window and having your handgun ready makes sense. Also call 911.

First, even if both turn directions have a green light, right turn gets the right of way. Second, aside from rolling down your window, I think you did the best you could. Leave the window up next time. If the person starts hitting he window or try's to open the door, that's when you go for your gun. If he gains entry it's game on.

I am with you, if no one gets hurt or there is no property damage what's the big deal. Just count your blessings and proceed with your day. People do make mistakes while driving either through lack of attention to what they are doing or ignorance about traffic laws (i.e. who's got the right of way)

In most road rage situations that escalate beyond harmless hand gestures and yelling insults, it is usually about more than the traffic incident.

I've said it before and I'll say it again- get a dashcam. There are decent ones under $100. I have front and rear cams in my vehicles and they are wired so that they start recording once the ignition is on. I've had my Class A for over 20 years now (right now the largest I drive is a 'B' class truck and that's only occasionally) and I commute about 20,000 miles a year. It's incredible how stupid people can be behind the wheel and how fast they can go from sweet and innocent to a raging lunatic in a matter of seconds.

You handled it very well. It's not the first or last time that hot head has threatened someone on the road and he will, undoubtedly, eventually either end up in jail or in the morgue.

Dad in front seat with right hand hidden. Kids in back seat with fingers in ears.
Time to get back in the pickup and leave.

You had the right of way. I wouldnt have rolled down the window, but otherwise sounds like everything went well.

If someone has gone to all those measures to stop your car. Then gets out of his while blocking you in it is time to draw. He has shown an intent to cause you great harm and is not using his faculties to reason through the situation. It is time to present overwhelming force. Keep your doors locked and windows up and greet the assailant with a gun pointed at him.

I disagree. Sounds like a good way to get arrested for brandishing a firearm to me.

How is it brandishing if you're in fear for your life? Wait til he's bashed out your window and is pulling you out of the car and you may not be able to get to your gun now that you really need it.

Plus whether I draw or not I'm getting his plate number and calling 911 on that driver.

Stopping in the road, impeding traffic, and blocking you are all illegal actions that this idiot did. At minimum I would have been on the phone with the police as soon as he blocked me.

I also would not have rolled my window down more than an inch and would have had my hand on my gun, ready but concealed.

You never know, he could have waited until he was up closer to you to draw and fire, so being ready is just being smart.

Of course calling 911 to report this aggressor would protect you from him calling and making up a lie on you.

I'm not saying that having your weapon at the ready...that is, unholstered but not visible...is inappropriate. What I'm saying is that greeting him with the barrel end of your weapon is a bad idea. At that point YOU are the one who has introduced deadly force into this equation, as the idiot driver's whole intentions are not known. Is he incredibly stupid, yes. But his intentions may be just to stand there and call you everything but a law-abiding citizen then leave. There's no deadly threat there. Clearing your holster and keeping it concealed just in case, yes. Clearing it and pointing a loaded weapon at someone because you're unsure, no. It's a bad idea, and likely to get you arrested. I'm sticking to that.

The right of way is dependent on the OP's state of residence. Some states require that you must turn into the lane closest to you. Meaning that if you are turning right you must stay in the lane closest to the curb, turning left across traffic you must turn in to the lane closest to the center of the roadway. Each state is different on how strictly that they enforce these rules. Technically both cars can turn at the same time in states that have a lane restriction while turning.

I agree totally. Sounds like brandishing at the very least. It would have been different if the jerk had something in his hand like a ball bat or tire iron. If the op pulled his gun and the cops got involved I'd bet money the jerk would have said something like" Gee whiz officer I was just walking back to make sure everyone was OK and the man pulled a gun on me ". Op you did the right thing. I could only hope that I would do the same if I was in your position

Interesting. Ive never heard that before. The laws Ive seen have all said left turn must yield to oncoming traffic.

Pretty sure here in CO, you have to stay in your respective lane.
