Saving Your Soul - and Your Life

By Gerard Valentino

Ohio's concealed carry law allows private property owners to post signs banning the carrying of weapons on their property. As a pro-gun advocate, I am saddened whenever I see such a sign, but never more so than when walking by a local chapter of a large Christian charitable organization.

Having been raised a Christian, I am familiar with the teachings of the Bible and bristle whenever people tell me that self-defense and being Christian don't mix. In fact, Christianity is based on the premise that innocent people should be helped and protected, which is the basis for Christianity's strong pro-life stance.

As someone with medical problems that limit my upper body strength, I probably couldn't fight off a determined attacker long enough for my wife and children to run to safety. That means I might have to take the life of a criminal intent on doing us harm and to that end I never go out in public unarmed. Luckily, for people like me, Ohio's concealed carry law gave citizens back the right to self-defense bestowed by the Creator and affirmed in the United States Constitution.

It also allows me to walk the streets without undue fear for the well being of myself and my family. If the day comes when I have to take the life of an attacker, I will do so knowing my choice was just, right, and well within the teachings of Christ and the Church. I will also go to my Maker knowing my actions will not be judged as wrong.

That is not the message being peddled by any church that posts signs banning legal concealed carry on church property. The signs are actually an outward way of stating that the life of everyone that walks through the door is secondary to a misguided fear of guns, and that the life of a criminal predator is more valuable than law-abiding patrons.

On my blog I had as an identifier of who I was

I am A Evengelical-Federalist-gun toting-pick driving-Hick-American. I had some gal e-mail and say how could I carry a weapon and be a Christian. I e-mailed her back with two things:

Passage Matthew 21:12:

Cleansing the Temple
12(A)And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the (B)money changers and the seats of those who were selling (C)doves.

I asked her if she was going to tell me that Christ wasn't violent.

Passage Luke 22:36:

36He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.

Then I asked her if she really believed that God doesn't want us to defend ourselves?

I never heard back from her

I am not a religious man per se but have high moral and ethical values. I respect life also of my fellow man and expect the same in return.

Until however that is, he or she decides to threaten mine or those of the people I cherish. Then all bets are off and I will - most certainly will, endevor to make good prevail over evil.

No person has any right to threaten a life or take a life, of any good and honest person - for gain or self gratification. Those so doing should expect only repayment in kind - with interest.

I see nothing ''ungodly'' with this prime principle of human existence.

I think part of the problem with Christians is that we have been mistranslating the 10 Commandments for too long. The sixth commandment(?) isn't "Thou shalt not kill" it really says "Thou shalt not commit murder." That's a very important distinction.

Great article.

Here are a couple of more relevant scriptures. Apparently God had no problem with weapons being stored in the Temple...

2 Kings 11:10-11 “Then he gave the commanders the spears and shields that had belonged to King David and that were in the temple of the LORD. The guards, each with his weapon in his hand, stationed themselves around the king--near the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.”

2 Chronicles 23:9-10: “Then he gave the commanders of units of a hundred the spears and the large and small shields that had belonged to King David and that were in the temple of God. He stationed all the men, each with his weapon in his hand, around the king--near the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.”

Well, lots of super devout folks say that the Bible should be taken 100% literally so does that mean that they can only carry spears that God gives them?

Handguns are out then...as there is no mention of a "Spears To GLOCKS" Upgrade in the Bible. :gah:

Luke 22: 36 Then He said to them, "But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no Glock, let him sell his garment and buy one and a case of ammo.

I think it's the concept more than the specific weapon. If not we need to do away with all this indoor plumbing too. I don't remember any mention of that in the Bible either.

That was great! :yup:

Actually, I have said this on our forum before.
Now that there are terror cell "sleepers" hidden inside the United States that want to specifically target for destruction any Non Muslim entities, establishments, & individuals it is prudent to be armed especially in houses of worship.
