SEALS get killed all over the world where there are no combat troops and will continue to do so.

That's just the nature of the game they play.
Dying in a way other than combat operations is different than Obama repeately saying there are no combat troops in Iraq, as US service members continue to be killed in combat.

One of my best friends was a SEAL back in the 80's- SEALs definitely have been deployed in a lot of places and fights very few people have heard of. Under every president. And they all keep it on the QT.

So he was decorated for doing something he officially couldn't have done, because he officially wasn't there? And he lost his life fighting in an engagement that he was officially not involved in?

I guess that happens when you fight against ISIS, who are officially not "Islamic Terrorists."

SEALs are constantly deployed for "covert action" that is never characterized as combat. And it probably shouldn't be. What they do is pretty much undercover and not open combat.

This nation has been enamored of "Specialized Forces" since the end of WWII. At first, it was kept in the CIA as they were supposed to be the better managers of "Operations". After Bay of Pigs, there was a "Serious Rethinking" of who did what, and all of the forces (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force) wanted Special Operations capability. The Seals have the best publicist. Since John Wayne, they have lacked a good publicist. Not to say that they are not included in a LOT of support operations (Killing Ben Laden) that come down the pike. The Marines under the commandants since Kelly and Gray have pushed to have the Marine Recon forces attached to "Achievable results for the forces deployed". That means no "Fun and games" and the money that goes with it. BTW, a lot of BUDS (Seal School) graduates are Recon Marines. They just don't get placed in the Teams. They are returned to their units as "Force Enhancements".

A lot of this goes to the British SAS forces mentality that many of the Civilian leadership has adopted. Looking for GI Joe or Jane to make issues go away. I don't know if this is healthy long term for the republic.

Where did you hear of Recon Marines going through BUDS and then returning to their units? Got a source?
