I just found this. I'd heard about it earlier on the radio.

Shoot-to-kill orders for New Orleans
From correspondents in Baton Rouge
02sep05

A DETACHMENT of 300 Arkansas National Guard troops have landed in anarchic New Orleans, with the authorisation to shoot and kill "hoodlums", Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco said.

"Three hundred of the Arkansas National Guard have landed in the city of New Orleans," Ms Blanco said.
"These troops are fresh back from Iraq, well trained, experienced, battle tested and under my orders to restore order in the streets.

"They have M-16s and they are locked and loaded.

"These troops know how to shoot and kill and they are more than willing to do so if necessary and I expect they will."

Wow! Not something you expect to hear from a politician

We will see how many of these out-of-control looters are actually dumb enough to slug it out with trained troops... :chairshot

Sadly, the governor probably wont be reelected. But----- she seems to be finally taking care of the problem at hand. If I were some type of LEO,in Iraq I would have let them loot the palaces. In NOLA I would let them take water.-------

It's to be hoped that a few examples made prove to be salutary lessons and the message sinks in. There has to be a semblance of order.

Hopefully the destitute with some morals and integrity will stay out of the way and get their much needed help. As for the scumbags - - well, I just hope our boys can deal with those and don't have to get into serious firefights, we don't need any losses there.

It there is something that Americans can learn from this disaster it should be you can not be completely Dependant on the government. Not for you protection or your basic needs. We all should have some means to protect ourselves and our loved ones and enough basic supplies (water and food that does not require refrigeration) to last us at least a week.

Looting, as it were, is one thing, law and order is another. Let us not forget that many looters have had everything they own either blown or washed away. They haven't had food or water since Katrina hit, many don't have a place to sleep, and only have the clothes on their backs.

I realize some loot simply for greed and gain, but many of the ones left behind are there because they had to stay. These people are struggling to live under dreadful circumstances. They don't have money and if they did there's no place for them to buy anything and if they do have money, they can't get it out of banks or ATM machines because there is no electricity.

And, I see the same thing you do, the looters carrying beer, TVs, etc that are "non-esential" items, but they don't have that either - most of them lost everything. To put it in perspective, how about we all agree to do this: we won't eat until they get food, we won't take a bath until they can, we'll turn off the electricity and water at our house, we won't smoke, drink beer, cokes, etc. and very little water. Then we'll sleep outside but not in a tent or camper and not in sleeping bags, but just on the ground. And, BTW, you can't have access to your guns.

Maybe then we can better critisize what we're not going through.

Sorry guys, I guess that's a pretty strong rant - no offense intended - just a call for compassion.

No prob's with compassion Tangle - non at all. My heart goes out to these desperate folks.

I am aware tho that the compassion is tainted because of what probably relatively few will try and get away with - maybe put looting aside for a moment - I am thinking most I guess of those who would rape, kill, only in fact satisfying their base criminal needs.

Exactly P95. That's why I delineated between law and order and looting per se in my original post.

Referring to the bold part of your comment: I have no compassion for those people. I believe a gunship should fly right along side the rescue choppers; if someone takes a shot at them, then they should get a personal demonstration of what a gunship can do.

If they rape and kill, I'm for ending their life without hesitation, on the spot. Killing and rape is always despicable, but to do it under these circumstances is an indescribable offense and should be dealt with quickly and lethally.

Rant off - for now.

Tangle, I could do what you suggested in post #6. If I did, I guarantee you that I would not go to my neighbors house, kick in his door, steal his big screen TV and rape his wife. I have allot more respect for women than that. Also I have a heck of allot more respect for others peoples belongings that they have worked hard for. I have been through times where we had to make do with a very limited amount of food and water. I did not wait 'til my buddy was asleep then proceed to steal his rations.--------

Actually Tangle, although a gunship was not in the picture, there were 2 Blackhawks and one of those huge 2 rotor birds flying along with the first convoy to arrive in New Orleans, you could plainly see that they were flying security over the convoy on MSNBC yesterday afternoon. So you're not too far off on how bad it has gotten there!

Personal responsibility

Sorry Tangle....can't agree.

Cradle to grave everything from the government is fine...but I would rather be responsible.

Those who were responsible took care of themselves..those who depended on others are the ones in a jam.

We live in the mid west, and would have no problem staying or leaving in an emergency. If cut off from any aid, we are good for at least 30 to 45 days, winter or summer, electricity/heat or no, water/food available or no, etc.

All vehicles, mini vans, have at least 1/2 tank gas=200 miles, and truck has a full tank at all times. I could go on but what for? Few care.

I feel bad for those and will make a contribution tomorrow at church when the plate is passed. All of our prayers are with these people.

Those who help themselves seem to do better than those who only look for help from others. Anyone who really wanted out of NO could have gotten out.

I agree; maybe you missed my statement in post #8 where I said, "If they rape and kill, I'm for ending their life without hesitation, on the spot. Killing and rape is always despicable, but to do it under these circumstances is an indescribable offense and should be dealt with quickly and lethally.[/]"

As far as taking other people's hard-worked-for-belongings, I agree again, but that's a completely difference offence than killing and raping, and needs to be dealt with at it's own level of offense.

I didn't read anything in your post that I disagree with and am unclear what you are disagreeing with in my post. Looks to me like we're pretty much on the same page.

However, I didn't suggest anything about cradle to grave...government..., etc. I was simply pointing out that there are those who didn't have cars, much less a 1/2 a tank of gas, didn't have the resources to prepare for 30 - 45 days, and couldn't get out.

We are blessed if we have the resources to prepare to exist for 30 - 45 days, but imagine our houses completely destroyed and all those provisions blown or washed away, and all we have left is the literally the clothes on our back. The people that are suffering the most are the ones that could not prepare because they didn't have resources.

This may prove to be the worse disaster by far than anything that has happened in the history of the US. I'm just saying this disaster left thousands of people stranded without food, shelter, or water. Extreme conditions create extreme responses. We can only guess what we would do if we were they and they were we.

Yeah, but we are! Knowing that I am in agreement with a friend(s) makes the day a little better!
