For some reason, I've been wondering about wearing a shoulder holster to carry one of my Ruger LCPs (Gen 1 and 2). I've never worn one, but often thought Steve McQueen looked so natural carrying his snub-nosed revolver in an upside-down holster under a sports jacket in the movie Bullitt.

While I'll never be as 'cool' as McQueen, I'd like to find a basic vertical or upside-down rig that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to purchase, maybe with a holder on the opposite side for a pair of extra mags. I may never wear a sports jacket again since I retired in 2010, but I could see wearing one under a button-down shirt or a light jacket. It would be especially nice for long drives.

Thanks for the input.

First off, simply forget buying cheap. Cheap = uncomfortable.

Plan on $200+ for a quality leather shoulder holster.

Probably the best is Andrews custom gun leather.

About the only way that seems natural for me to carry my LCP max is in a modified Doc Holliday style other than in my pants pocket. I guess I have problems with the extra reach at my age. Are you sure that you want to carry a gun that doesn't have a safety aimed anywhere but down away from your body? Can you post a picture of how you intend to carry that gun upside down? I just can't imagine it.
I can't get the image out of my mind after reading about the guy who shot himself in the butt while carrying his gun and holster in the small of his back.
But to each his own.

^^^ I could not agree more, ALL of those gun show $40 shoulder rigs verge on useless. Not comfortable at all.

The original company to make this style was Berns Martin back in the day, but I understand McQueen's was custom made by the prop department. As long as you could make sure the gun is secure. The LCP is quite safe to carry. McQueen's colt didn't have a safety either :). Long double action trigger pulls have been proven to be quite safe.

that being said, The Galco Miami classic ( it had a different name when I bought mine) is the only shoulder rig I have ever worn all day and didn't hate by dinner time. Not cheap, but it is comfy. The supporting strap must be wide IMO, but I was carrying a Commander style 45 in mine (A Star PD), so a good bit heavier than the LCP. My LCP has one of the pocket clips that I slide over my pants and it works beautifully for when I am not wearing a gun :)

I have the Miami Classic Lite for my Springfield Hellcat and an Alien Gear for my Sig 938. I like them both, but the Alien Gear is slightly more comfortable. Either way both are good. Also, the mag carriers for the Alien Gear are excellent. Further, I agree that cheap is really not the way to go.

I have a nice shoulder rig for my HK VP9sk that carries 2 extra 10 rd mags. But, I get what you are saying because as cool as I am, I'll never be as cool as one of my childhood heroes Richard Roundtree a.k.a. "Shaft" but I'm damn close.
