So as some may recall, the P238 for the wife was a bust. So she snagged my Kimber because, well, she gets what she wants!

So I found a guy on Armslist who had a Sig Ultra and snagged it. I paid less for this than I did the Kimber and it has night sights and front strap checkering (two things that should be standard on 1911's IMO) so BONUS! I put my VZ grips on it and really like the look, but also like the cherry wood (maybe cocobolo) as well. What do you all think?

I just got home from the road and I haven't fired it, so we'll see if it's reliable. It won't cycle live rounds with my colt mag or Kimber blued mag. Cycles them fine with my Kimber stainless mags and the Sig mag. I have heard they are picky about mags so no alarm. Fit and finish is amazing on this gun, dare I say maybe slightly better than the Ultra Carry? :nono: But, just like the Kimber, the finishing of the barrel on the hood is terrible. Why do companies not just polish them for us? The Sig barrel is crowned though, and looks better in that regard. It looks like Sig spent a little extra time working out the small details others don't in the "non custom" 1911 world so it is nice to see.

I'll write up a full post range session report. One thing I will say for the Sig, the trigger is MUCH lighter than the Kimber. Breaks clean and crisp, very series 70ish, but it is a series 80 gun.

Looks like a very nice pistol, there.

After 1000rds, definitely consider doing a Range Report write-up with lots of photos. I'm sure you'll have everyone drooling.

And if you end up sending it to, say, Clark Custom Guns for some special treatment, I'm sure any write-up you then do will have everyone fainting outright from the beauty and function. The "oooh! ahhhs!" will be deafening. :yup:

Enjoy. Hopefully it'll take your mind off your "lost" Kimber.

Thanks! So many ideas running through my head. I am really liking the Sig, of course, that could all change after some rounds go through it! And good call on the long term report, will do for sure. . I hope to not buy any more guns anytime soon. I have all I need right now! Need to buy AMMO and shoot, not buy!

I agree with the comment on the night sights and front strap serrations. The two gripes about my Ultra carry, and night sights are on the way so thats an issue that will be fixed soon. Interested to hear how it holds up to the Kimber in terms of reliability and accuracy.

years ago when I sold guns part time, I always marveled that SIG pays more attention to the inside of the firearm than most companies
do to the exterior. I think you'll find that the SIG is a better gun than the Kimber.....even with the external extractor.
Just a disclaimer: I don't own a SIG or a Kimber so take what I say with a big grain of salt.

You need more grips. Say, a nice set of heavily-checkered 18-LPI Gaboon ebony. And another in Bocote. Perhaps another in heavily-figured Desert Ironwood or Leopard wood. A sexy set in, oh, Amboyna burl or Tasmanian fiddleback eucalyptus burl. Dress for "success."

Well done!

If your Ultra is anything like my SIG C3, you're going to love it. I second the suggestion that you not let your wife shoot it! She'll like it too.

I like both sets of grips.

Range Report

I just got back from range first range session with Sig Ultra Nitron. Not what I was hoping for, you be the judge. I had already broken the gun down and lubed it properly, even added a little extra oil cause I hear Sigs like to run "wet". First two mags were fine, no problems. Accuracy was pretty good too (first few shots I pulled an inch left @ 7yards).
Mag #3 I get a premature lock to the rear. Huh? Hit the slide lock and back to work. Happens again about 6 rounds later. Huh? Same drill. Then after about 20 more shots it fails to feed, bullet is halfway into chamber. Damn. Tap, rack, bang. 20 more shots, same deal (although this time with a blued Kimber mag so I won't count this against the gun cause they say they only like Sig mags). The rest of the trip went fine and it fired a mag of my 185gr hollow points no problems. So all in all I had 3 FTF's and 3 premature slide locks in 107 rounds. Not exactly super happy with those numbers.

I dunno if I am riding the slide stop or what. I have never had that problem with ANY 1911 before, but maybe? Didn't like the grips for shooting so they are coming off and rosewoods going back on the pistol. As for the FTF's, I am a little po'd. I hit the feed ramp with my dremel prior to the trip, it was like a mirror so that isn't the problem. I honestly think the mag sucks. But the other Kimber mag had an issue as well and I didn't take my "good" mags from my Kimber Ultra cause wifey had them with her.

I called Sig customer service and they said they would ship me a label for return. I said no, I'll put another 100 rounds through it before I do that. Again, accuracy was on par with the Kimber, nice tight groups (see circles in the pics, each one is a 7-10 round grouping at 21 feet). I do have to pay a little more attention to my shooting to get that level of accuracy than I do with my Kimber Ultra, oh, excuse me, my OLD Kimber Ultra (the one that eats anything no matter what mind you). All in all, I am not overly impressed with Sig Sauer. The p238 was horrible, this 1911 isn't much better. So we shall see. Oh well.

I shoot my P226 just as well as my Glock and S&W 3rd Gens. Don't know why you felt you had to polish the ramp prior to shooting the gun, but... I've never had to polish one. Hope a few more rounds get it straightened out.

Rectified the situation today. Traded the Sig for another Kimber Ultra Stainless. I just can't keep a carry weapon that isn't 100%. My confidence was shattered. The Sig is supposed to be a better gun. But for all the front strap checkering, undercut trigger guard, night sights, and crowned barrel, it didn't function 100%. BOTH my Kimbers always did. So now my wife and I have matching guns. Except she has the trigger and grip tape (mods I did for myself). I am going to do the same to my gun though so they will be identical. Guess we need matching shirts for the range now!

I can say this, the Sig p238 was crap, the Sig Ultra Nitron was too. I dare say Sig will not get any of my future business. Too bad too.
