One has to wonder what was going through the DPD management's mind when they decided to stage a purse snatching at a local gas station. Geez, what could possibly go wrong with that idea?

The cops decide to simulate a purse snatching in Detroit and have a local TV station film it. An off duty FBI agent is pumping gas and chases the perp down with gun drawn. Fortunately, other cops intervened before he caught up with the "perp".

If you are going to do this kind of thing, at least do it in one of the gun free zones, that way you know the only people that would have guns are criminals are are not likely to try to assist in the stopping of a crime.

Even if it were a GFZ, the FBI guy would still have been armed. They were trying to do it out in public to gage the veracity and reactions of "witnesses". They did a poor job of controlling the environment and a controlled environment would not have accomplished the intended purpose. Bad idea all the way around.

~snip from article:
"You had citizens who could've been hurt. A lot of people out here have CPLs now and carry weapons. They're tired of the crime that's going on in Detroit, and they might want to stand up and help somebody that's in this type of situation. It just so happened it's a gas station where the FBI fills up all their vehicles," Gargalino said.
~

Scenario: CPL holder acts quicker or unbeknownst to standing officers and shoots. I can picture many bad things happening in the next 10 seconds of that one. At least someone addressed the fact, (maybe even enlightened some) that there are citizens out there who are willing and able to act. Wonder if any more hackles stood on end when that one was brought up?

The problem is some people have slight ego problems and they all want to be on tv. Sometimes the emotion interferes with judgement and logical decision making.

FBI agent almost shoots cop during staged robbery

A plainclothes officer "stole" a purse for a news segment, and the agent drew his gun, unaware that he was aiming at a cop

By PoliceOne Staff

DETROIT — An FBI agent came close to shooting a Detroit cop at a gas station Wednesday during a staged purse snatching for a TV news report.

A news station was filming a segment on “How to be a Better Witness” when the incident happened. A Detroit officer, who had been approved by the department to take part in the exercise in plainclothes, "stole" a woman's purse and ran around the gas station, according to My Fox Detroit.

However, an off-duty FBI agent who was filling his tank and was unaware of the simulation, responded by drawing his weapon.

"He witnesses the whole thing," said Inspector Shawn Gargalino with the Detroit Police Department. "He gives chase. He pulls his weapon, and as he turns the corner around the gas station, he's stopped by another officer, who identifies herself as a police officer and 'don't shoot, don't shoot, this is a scenario.'"

A couple of lessons:

1. Being sure of the situation, if you're going to step in and stop a "crime" in progress.
2. Taking pains to provide some "traffic" folks managing onlookers/bystanders, if you're going to "fake" situations in public like that.

Pretty important stuff, and this sort of situation shows why. It's highly unlikely we'll ever see such a thing, ourselves, but you never know.

Hopefully those folks winging it in public will get a clue, realizing just how close they came due to their own failure of preparations at the scene (failing to provide "spotters" or "traffic" people around the scene to avoid just this sort of misunderstanding). Their "robber" could have gotten shot, or even killed.

They have movie sets for that sort of thing, and Detroit has to be full of closed-down gas stations. Epic "fail" for the knuckleheads who set this up.
