Do any of you SKS owners have a scope attached and what kind ?
I just got my SKS and I like it but I was thinking of getting a scope,
any sugestions? I dont plan on shooting more than 200 yards.
Thanks.

I had a Russian SKS about nine years ago. After having it and working with it for about two years, I traded for something else. That's not to say the SKS wasn't an excellent rifle (back in the day). But even for 200yd shooting, I would rely totally on the stock sights, just like I will never have a scope on my AK. IMO......learn the sights, get the front sight tool, and learn the rear leaf adjustments. If you absolutely think you need a scope, I would recommend a side mount if they have them. The top cover mount last I remember, is way to risky for repeat zero, and the adjustments available pretty much rule out a solid platform that's repeatable. In my honest opinion, get to know your new rifle before you think about getting a scope for it. It's supposed to come battle ready with some training...as is. Again..IMO, if you are looking for optic sights on the SKS for whatever reason, you're more than likely skipping over some of the basics, or trying to compensate for physiologic requirements relating to your vision. On the other hand, if your SKS is somewhat your SHTF go-to...then maybe think about a red dot sight on a fore end mount. Back in my days of the SKS, they were superbly accurate to 100yds and pinned barrels. Nowadays, I'm out of the loop. I also figure the original quality of these rifles has reached it's peak, and going downhill.....in which case, if your rifle isn't inherently accurate with open sights, it more than likely won't be more so with advanced optics for it.

I am in full agreement with Ram Rod on this, I owned a few SKS rifles, traded and sold for better, but it is still a damn fine rifle.Rely and LEARN the open sights. You can hit COM at 100 yards with the open sights once adjusted and still make a "kill shot" so to speak at 200. Scopes are a no-go if you chose the cover - mounted style, side mount is ok, but you just dont really need one on an SKS IMO.

Good stuff guys. I have a Ruger 10/22 with a scope because sometimes its hard to see things at that distance.
With my SKS I can hit a man size object at 100 yards without a scope. I just figured if I could hit an apple at 100
yards with my Ruger that if I got a scope for the SKS maybe I could replicate that accuracy. I love the rifle and the
7.62X39 round. I think I will just get more practice with the sights.
I have a had Chinese SKS for years. Replaced the stock to make it longer and put a replacement receiver cover w/ a scope mount built in it. I use a red dot scope and have hunted white tail with it for years. Make a good brush gun. I have seen a few w/ short 4x scopes on them but have not had much experience w/ them.

I would highly recommend this scope mount I received a while back.

SKS Scope Mounts : Scout Scopes

This nice thing about this one is, its a two part mount. And, when you take off the top section, which has the rail for the rings, btw, it has a what resembles the stock sights. So you can shoot it with or without a scope on it. Its very very well made, and made to never lose zero while cleaning your rifle.
I've had several SKS rifles, both with receiver cover mount and side mount scopes. Over time they all went back to open sights. For the range I was using them at and they were really farm truck guns the scopes just never enhanced them enough to overcome worrying about the scope. Like the AK they fire great covered in mud, dusty, full of sand (or wheat chaff), and after getting scratched up from months in a pickup bed.
I have a red dot sight mounted on the receiver cover mount on one of my Yugo SKS. I think the longer scopes interfere with loading using stripper clips and ejected brass hit it unless you get a deflector.
Agree with the above. The best way to mount optics on the SKS would either be replacement of the rear leaf with a rail or a side mounted rail that would be bolted to the frame not the cover.
I have a Norinco SKS. The iron sights are perfect. If you want to get a scope I'd recommend replacing the bolt carrier cover with one that already has mounts welded on to it. The only problem would be having to resight it in after you take it off each time to clean it. Not worth the hassle IMO.
Very good points when it comes to scope or unscoped. However, its seems that the scope thing would not be the way to go (for me at least).
If I were to get a Bushmaster etc then that would be different. Iron sights for me and perfect that method.
With the big iron sights why would anyone want a scope on a sks ? I rather put
one on my mosin naget. My mosin is the best hundred dollar rifle I had in a long time. It's right up there with the $65 dollar enfield I purchased at a pawn shop. I needed money and it was sold for a small profit of 10 bucks !

Because my neck wont allow me to sight up to those "big sights" and no, heh, I dont have a fat neck. I do have arthritis and im not very flexable in some parts of my spine. I also dont have the greatest long distance eyesight.

But, Like I said, the scope mount I linked to takes the place of the Iron sights, Looks just like it, and has elevation adjustments, so you can enjoy both methods.
I enjoy my SKS with the original sights.
