This article is really great. Explains the history and differences in our cultures.

http://www.davekopel.com/2A/LawRev/Japanese_Gun_Control.htm

But I also found this. Don't let you blood boil at this control advocate.( if you read the first link it really frames the argument in the second)

http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~zj5j-gttl/guns.htm

This person is Obviously a control advocate socialist with standard control fodder. But one thing that bothered me is the 340,000 guns stolen statistic. Can anyone help me here? Are that many guns being stolen each year?

Thanks Bryan.
Now I am going to have to finish reading that just as soon as I get back home.
Extremely interesting thread.
Thanks for posting it on the forum.

While gun control may work in Japan, consider the U.S. culture is closer to the British. And we have seen how well gun control works there.
One reason Japan did not invade the U.S. after Pearl Harbor was the personal owership of firearms in the U.S. If the Japanese do not wish to own guns, fine, but let em run their own contry, not mine.

Bryan,

I found this page while googling for "how many stolen guns"...hope it helps.

http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/guic.pdf

You need to scroll down about halfway in the document to see the see chart that indicates how many are stolen each year. It's thought provoking enough to justify the purchase of a decent safe for our firearms.

Regards,

Fred

Good subject Bryan.

I am in little doubt that thefts make up a badly significant section of illegally aquired guns but - have trouble believing some figures.

Of course (yet) another reason the anti's want control is to negate that occurring - thinking as they do it will solve all ills!! Plenty of other sources over and above theft.

Thanks for the link, it really helped me out. So its not just a random statistic they made up. I need constant Info to keep ahead in arguments as most anti's just through up statistics and leave the burden of proof on you. In my readings its seems apparent that all these utopia schemes have one fatal flaw(complete substitute of the public). just read the purest socialist literature:
plato's "republic", Sir Henry Mores "Utopia", and Marx "manifesto" all of which "require" tight government control of the public. someone should coin a fraze "more gun control less freedom". BTW This gives me more incentive to get my safe lock fixed because if your not there to secure your firearms then something else should (not just trigger locks).

I always enjoy reading anything by Kopel, who is a voice of reason in a whirlwind of propaganda, disinformation, and outright lies. It is easier to understand the Japanese willingness to go along with such strict prohibitions when you consider that they do not have the pioneering history that most of us share in the U.S. Also, and most important, they are a homogenous society. Very few of their citizens are not Japanese. Our own population is about the most diverse in the world not only in terms of our ancestry, but in current terms of our population makeup by country of origin. A significant portion of our population was not born in this country. Frankly, the absence/presence of firearms in Japan is not the primary reason for their relatively low crime rates per 100,000. The uniformity of their societal base is more to the point. Some of this societal rigidity is eroding though as more and more Western influences enter into the mix.

found this new link on "Moderate" Answers.com which they also sight lower mortality rate in japan and the UK. Titled: Gun politics in the United States

http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery...3a&linktext=Gun politics in the United States

Sorry the link is really messed up so I just posted the whole thing cut and paste it. they also cite lower suicide rates (which is countered by the first link I posted). Also the say the militia is countered by Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution. They bring up lots of issus mostly on the control side. It is seems no one in the media addresses the fact that every culture the has increased diversity also has increased conflict. Look at Australia France and other countries that are having mass immigrations. The only thing I can say is that I personally would never misuse a firearm and will endeavor to secure them while i'm not around. I can never really speak for anyone else.

Lots of guns are stolen each year. But read the headlines carefully. Many MANY of those are stolen from the LEO's at all levels, Feds, state and local AS WELL AS the military! Before they can tell me to secure my guns, they'd better look to their own house.
