As I was practicing my speed reloads. Drop a mag. insert new and drop slide, I noticed something. My SA Champion will drop the slide by itself with the force of a hard mag seating. Seems to always lock open with a empty mag. so no worries there. i was kinda suprised my gun did this. I have heard of it before but never had a gun do this. Anyone else have guns that do this?

Also have had a Ruger do it never a 1911 though and yes a glock do it ...


Usually its wear on the Slide stop or a weak Slide Stop Spring if the gun uses it..

I dont worry about it if you slap the mag hard enough usually with barrel tilted slightly up or straight up is when this happens..

on a 1911 the issue is a malformed slide stop lever , it is fixed by fileing or grinding a dimple on the back of it so the slide stop plunger can properly engage ( assuming the slide stop plunger itself has not came unpeened on the front, see if you can wiggle it to see any movement is too much ) hope that helps

This occurs it seems easily on Glocks - some anyways. It also happens on my wife's Bersa.

The inertial impetus of a harsh mag slam is enough to overcome the (often modest) spring tension on the hold-open action of the slide lock.

I don't encourage reliance on making use of this but - if the mag is briskly inserted and this does not occur then it is no problem going straight into the usual sling shot action on slide. No time need be lost.

Training is for normal slide actuation.

Quite common on Bersas as P95 mentioned. Can, however, lead to a weak slide stop, especially on Bersas.

I have gotten into the habit of not using the slide catch as a release. I simply give a slight tug on the slide and slingshot it. I can do this faster than manipulating the catch with my thumb.

I have learned from great people like all of you that this is good practice on any handgun.

If in doubt, it never hurts to let a competent gunsmith or the maker inspect it.

Even though it seems like it would be a nice added "time saving" bonus...it's not a good idea to mentally ingrain it or incorporate the minor malfunction a misbehaving firearm as part of your practice or training routine.
Some critical day when you really NEED it to happen...it won't --- or...you'll switch guns & then you'll need to re~pattern yourself. Just my opinion on that.

I've had it happen on an older 1911 Government, and that gun is in a state of semiretirement as a cherished companion. It was my very first 1911. I've never had this happen on any other gun. My H&K is too new, so I'll keep an eye open for that. I'm shooting my first IDPA match with the USP on Jan 13th so I'll let you know.

I have a Colt 1911 Government that does that all the time. Like ExSoldier's, that one's pretty much a safe queen so I don't worry about it. My other 1911s do not have that issue - even when I've slammed magazines in so fast that I've almost bounced the gun out of my hand (another NOT good thing to do).
We had a couple Glocks at one time - both of them dropped the slide when inserting a mag.

might want to keep an eye on things pertaining to tat..............might pose a threat of a AD at some point in time........Personally, I'd have it looked at...Some weapons, such as the older mauser HSCs were made specifically to do that <chamber the round when full mag is inserted> but normally, it isn't the case with other weapons.

Class3NH -- excellent point. Thanks. I hadn't considered the AD possibility. Guess it's time to take the old gun apart and sounds like it gets a new slide stop and/or a bit of gunsmithing.

It sounds like you've got some burrs on the slide stop...........might want to look at the way the stop contacts the mag follower.............Sounds like the rounds are catching the slide stop, while the mag is being seated...Thus......the burr, or out of tollerance dimentions of the slide stop............dremmel tool can take care of it VERY easily ..:yup: Good luck !! :wave:
