Tennessee's new "safe commute" law, not so much.

Tennessee's new parking lot law, supposedly allowing permit holders to carry en route to their place of employ, and lock the gun in the car, can still get you fired, if your employer has a no gun policy on premises....

At least, according to TN AG.

From the article, "The opinion also confirmed that the new law does not allow permit-holders to bring guns to work in vehicles that are leased, rented or borrowed.".

A lot of people lease cars. Apparently they are not covered either.

Also, "It also said that a permit holder violates the law’s requirement that the firearm or ammunition “be kept from ordinary observation” when a parking lot security camera records him or her placing the firearm or ammunition into a nonobservable location in the vehicle."

So, if I have a lock box in my trunk and a security camera picks me up putting it in the box, I am violating the law.

That is the way it is here, no crime to have it in your car at work if the parking lot is accessbile by the public, but .... your employer could still fire you. Not a problem. I stopped and put mine in my trunk a couple of blocks from work, and then did the same thing on the return trip from work to put it back on in the car. A pain, but it worked.

Got tired of that and later..... I simply had a smaller towel in the car ...... layed it down crumpled up next to me, pulled the gun off in the car while hand was covered by the towel, roll towel around gun and dropped it in a lock box that slid under the seat. Gun was never "visible " to anyone. Anyone sees me, they only see a towel.

I hated it, but I did it. Then I retired. Now I can legally carry on the property and there is not a thing they can say or do to me. LOL. They put a sign out by the parking lot, which is not binding legally at all, as you can only post buildings here.... and they don't post any of the buildings.

A few of us .. very trusted friends... who all carried & locked our guns in our cars, called it our "secret society" and jokingly made up a handshake. If we happened to be in a meeting together, we'ld do our handshake and people would ask us what that was all about, and we just told them ... "private joke".

Haha stories like that make me feel a lot better when I get improvised ideas like that. I often wonder how many people do similar, usually thinking not many and that I may be the weird one. Thanks for sharing! :wink:

The old towel trick :smile: Seriously, I make a point of keeping a couple of towels in the car. I've used them
when needing to remove a gun and pocket holster, used them to cover up moving gun from pants to box in trunk, and the other way around. Their use not only makes it unlikely someone will see the gun, but should that happen it is clear the display was not intentional.

AND-- they are handy for cleaning up after coffee, Big Gulps, or spilled blood.
