Let me start off by saying this; I don't buy into the hype. But a lot of people do, which can create a lot of problems in itself. While I don't think the sun, moon and stars are conspiring to end the world, I would expect some interesting times as we draw nearer. Its an election year, and a good number of the population thinks there is a possibility that the world is going to end. That could make CNN and Fox news very busy.

Maybe some riots, mass suicides and the like. Maybe not too. I hope we can post in this thread on 12/22/12 and laugh at ourselves. Have you done are planning to do anything to prepare? If not for the end of the world, but maybe for the nut jobs who do expect the world to end.

Lets debate, discuss or maybe even fight over the topic. Keep a sense of humor, and not break forum rules. No cussing, no religion and certainly no personal attacks. Its not its the end of the world.

Maybe.

Its NEVER to early to prepare for the Zombie Apocalypse!! But all this time we (all of us) have been buying guns, ammo, food, Ect. Stocking up for what we feel might be some sort of political attack on us, but in reality the world is simply gonna not exist….. who knew!!

Oh well, why bother…….. I guess I have some nice weapons for sale if anyone is interested…… won’t need them on 12/22/12 anyway………..

I plan on seeing the movie, but I don't buy into any of the B.S. surrounding it. No matter how insane something is, you can rest assured that plenty of morons will believe it .

I will prepare for 2012 the same as I do for 2011 and 2013.

While I do think the world as we know it is changing, and not for the better I might add, that is the political make-up of our society right now. Do I think the world will end? NO!

Do I think America is in it's decline and destined to become just another anti-gun socialist utopia where the working class is taxed into poverty? Absolutely! This is definate unless we throw most of the bums in office, out on their rear. If we re-elect the obamessiah, and his demonratic majority they will see this as a mandate by the people, and Pelosi has already stated that she would like to take every gun from Mr and Mrs America, "but the time is not right yet."

As an expert on the subject (I've been researching it for almost 10 years) there are some truths to the insanity.

We do know for a fact that 2012 is an interesting year in our solar system as far as alignments go. The Mayan calandar was not meant to signify the "End of the World" it was meant to signify the end of a cycle.

That cycle is the Earth precession (axis tilt) finally moving to the other side. About every 25,000 years or so this happens, and its happening now. This also probably explains the entire "Global Warming" argument too. It should be done around 2012, or as late as 2023. There is some argument as to the accuracy of the years on the calendar so 2023 is the corrected year some say.

No one knows exactly how the Maya were so darn advanced in their astronomy but whatever the reason they were geniuses before their time. We know this stuff now because of computers.

We also know that this precession will also bring with it some serious solar storms. No one is certain the two are related but the Sun seems to be gearing up for a massive amount of eruptions (Sun spots). These storms are the only real danger, and they are only a danger because our society is so reliant on electricity. These storms could overwhelm power grids all over the planet and that will cause problems. Massive blackouts are always dangerous.

But the fact that the Maya knew this, for some reason has convinced some that they "knew" even more and that the end of the calendar was meant to be some destruction. But the Earth has undergone this cycle before, and it will do it again.....

The only real danger are the solar storms. If they do cause blackouts like some suspect it will be the people, not the planet, that cause the problems.

Hmmm...where to start.

2012 was predicted by civilizations that are no longer in existance.

Maybe, if they were still here, I might give them a bit more credibility.

On the other hand, with things digressing the way they are, I have no doubt that when its here, it will be one of the most interesting times the that the world has seen.

I predict another thread started by Sixto that will have over 10,000 hits.

A lot of preposterous nonsense.

The report issued by Lee, Peart, & Lifeson accurately fixes the date at 2112, not 2012.

Very mixed feelings on this topic on my part. I certainly don't accept the premise of 2012 as some pre-ordained end of the world event date--especially given in particular its foundation in religious beliefs which are not acceptable to the Abrahamic religions; to say nothing of the fantastical nature of the assertions. I do not see why anyone who belongs to an Abrahamic faith would accept the forecasts of an idol worshiping society. Nor, do I see why an agnostic or atheist would enthusiastically embrace such forecasts. To do so, by members of either group, slaps at their own belief system. In short, why pay attention to the forecasts of a long gone "civilization" which to our knowledge left little or nothing to the lasting benefit of man kind.

Fantasy end of world scenarios don't concern me. Economic hardship and its consequences, terrorism and its potential for catastrophic events of the nuclear kind do concern me. Infectious diseases, in particular emerging diseases, concern me.

I am at one time both very optimistic and very pessimistic. I'm optimistic that we have the ability to overcome almost anything that comes our collective way. I am pessimistic that we have the individual psychological fortitude, or the social and political institutions needed to overcome the come what may of the future.

Nice post FatCat. Thats the kind of stuff I'm looking for.

BTW, the movie stunk. It reminded me of something that should be on USA network at 2am.

Well, the Bengals did just beat the Steelers twice in the same year, so maybe the end is coming sooner than 2012?

I personally don't but into it. I'll have like a year and a half between my EAS and the date, so I might stock up on some extra supplies, but nothing too crazy, and thats just in case the nutjobs start rioting, so I can stay put.

Yes, the Bengals did win again. If it wasnt the cardiac cats, I'd be tempted to claim the AFC north as theirs. And nobody saw that coming.

Thats enough to scare anybody.

I'm just wondering if the Mayan's ended the calendar in 2012 because they ran out of room to write/carve on the wall of the cave....

Why do these threads always have official in the titles anyways SIXTO, what if I want my own 2012 thread, is it the fake one?

I think that the Mayans probably should have seen their own downfall, which was a lot sooner and more important to them one would think, before hey saw the end of the whole world.

Thats right. Its almost as good as copyrighting a topic.

Start a "non official" thread when there is already an official one I'll sue you.

I've decided that even if it is true, there is no use in me worrying about it... why? Because its the end of the world. There would be no point in it.

For those of you who are worried about December 21, 2012, here's something that will put it all into perspective.

Go to Google and type in the following:

+"Y2K" +"martial law"

I'll wait until you get back....

(drums fingers)

(hums)

You're back now? Good.

There are STILL websites out there claiming that Bill Clinton is going to declare martial law when Y2K hits! Seriously. I guess some of the nutjobs forgot to take them down. Society was going to crash and we were all going to be holed up in bunkers while roving gangs walked the streets in search of food or whatever they could steal.

If you'll also remember, there was a TV movie that greatly dramatized the whole Y2K thing. I never saw it, though, because I just couldn't be bothered.

Does the name Gary North mean anything to any of you? He was the official "guru" and panic monger of Y2K. His solution? Buy one of his cabins up in Montana where you'll be safe. But this wasn't his first time to hit the panic button. In the mid-80's, he had caused a minor panic over the AIDS epidemic. His solution? Buy one of his cabins up in Montana where you'll be safe.

The point is that there is a panic monger on every corner of the Internet who wants to sell you something. I wish I had invested in battery companies and camping gear in 1998.

2012? I see this as a great year. Why? Because Obama is almost guaranteed to be elected out of office.

What's going down in 2012? What day? What time? My permit doesn't expire until 2014. I'm definitely going to see another renewal notice! If you've got some cold, hard facts about why I might not see that renewal notice, you just let me know.
