The best performing brand out there on jobs is Milwaukee. Too bad about the possible legal entanglements because it looks well done.
While I do have a number of newer power tools from Milwaukee, (include the BEST folding razor knife "I've EVER come across in 60+ years of knife handling), "I've got a number of Makita tool's in the +30 year range that are still going strong". Batteries have become the "only challenge for them". There price range is about 15-20% higher, but they have been put through the ringer, & still perform. Once again. other than the batteries, parts/service easy to come by also.

DeWalt makes some nice tools. I would have probably picked Milwaukee, but because someone else has DeWalt equipment using the 20V system I went with that to have interoperability between the equipment.

As far as lawsuits go, I doubt DeWalt would take action in this case. It's most likely not worth their time. Also, with their market pool this custom paint job will garner them favorable attention.

Wouldn't take that bet.

That link lacks a lot of detail. Without more details on the items being sold I don't know if cheap knock-offs were being sold or not. That fact matters because selling fake knock-offs is a crime after all.

The one fact we do know is that the company is showing off an example of the work they were commissioned to do. This is quite literally a form of art.

Copyright laws on works like this are a grey area. In this case DeWalt would need to prove the artwork causes them financial hardship, or hurts their corporate image along with that being the intent of the work being done. At best all they can probably do is get the company to pull the picture and not do any other similar commissions.

There are a lot more pictures of that gun on their FB site. It does not appear that DeWalt has taken issue with this company yet.

For the color scheme maybe. But including the Trademark on the item and listing it for sale is a clear Trademark infringement. Don't confuse copyright with trademark rights. They are disparate areas of ownership.

Decades ago Family Handyman Magazine did a survey of tool repair centers to find the most reliable brands. They said in a footnote that Makita was not included because they couldn't find any data. They quoted one repair center saying "They just don't come back."
