Round here the odd gunshot is not too unusual - semi rural of course and that is a factor. I don't shoot much more than .22's from my yard but folks do occasionally let rip with more within earshot.

Bit like car alarms tho - I wonder occasionally if a shot is significant or not - usually gloss over it and sure as heck am not gonna call in ''shots fired'' every darned time LOL!

But that said - I guess time of day has a lot to do with it - if daylight then I ignore and soon anyways we'll have hunting shots all over.

So I guess dependent on your location you will be more or less aware/concerned. What is your reaction, where you are?

Depends. I'm halfway decent as anyone at knowing what each caliber/platform combination sounds like. I sure can recognize .270 anywhere.

If it happened right here, I'd call the boys in blue because odds are someone's had to shoot a burglar.

Now if I was 40 miles down the road, I'd think "I need to put my hearing protection on..."

In My Area

Any gunshot here would be good cause for alarm.

Where I used to work there would always be "Drive By" 9mm cartridge cases on the sidewalks & the streets.
I would need to look at EVERY car that was going up & down the street.
I had to make sure there were not any gun barrels poking out the car windows.

We don't hear to many shots fired out this way, well except when people are shooting at cars or other people and I don't count those as shots fired, they just happen further away and mostly at night.
Now one exception was a guy blowing another guy away with a shot gun on a very busy street truck to car shooting. So it reeally wasn't shots fired yet. Shots fired whould be if my neighbor got screwed up and unloaded his .44 into my garage or something and that has not happened yet.
The state feels that a B/B gun is a gun I believe and shooting a B/B gun in your yard would also be shots fired. Man with a gun shooting at rats, here comes the local swat team in their $500,000 new swat team truck to take care of the situation.
Its really crazy about shooting, in PA I would guess you could shoot rats in your garage and people would understand if your in the country and not city. Sorry for rambling here.

Not rambling Richard - no problem!

I do feel some sympathy for folks in cities and some states - but have to say that even round here - things are not what they might have been 15 - 20 years ago. I think fairly hard before I loose off some shots round here even tho it is semi rural. Never know who is paranoid!

Still - I am thankful for small mercies - it could be worse.

Rural areas I think nothing of it -either a burglar has met a homeowner in the middle of nowhere, at which point I feel it's none of my business, or someone's out spotlighting rabbits.

Or I'm out with my night vision being a bad man. :0

Hi Chris.....Where I Shoot

Where I shoot is not where I live.
I actually live in a NICE area...believe it or not.
We have 60 acres of garbage property out past Butler.
The "Bullet Wasteland" THAT is NoWheresVille, Pa.
It's a bit over an hours drive away from my home.
It never was nice property. Mostly all Sumac weed trees & sporadic pine trees now & a lot of gravel & old railroad ties & junque.
It's pretty torn up & overgrown.
No water, gas or electricity or dwellings...just ugly space.
The Land That God Forgot.
Even the Deer don't want to live there.

Where I live it is a daily occurence. If you don't hear gunfire for more than 24 hours, you think something must be wrong. :) (No I don't live in Detroit)

Funny thing is, shooting is contagious. We'll go down for a shooting session - whether it be trap, rifles, or pistols, and no less than 30 minutes later someone else is shooting somewhere across the valley - guaranteed. You just can't resist when someone else is having fun.

Gunfire where I live (NW Miami) is almost unheard of except the 4th of July and New Year's when some idiotic neighbor decides to play Bedouin and start shooting up in the air.

In Vegas I hear gunshots all the time. I'm about 3 miles from the "Strip" and about once or twice a week I'll hear a few shots go off. I usually just stay away from the windows for a bit and go about my business. If it's within a hundreds yards or so, I'll call the B&W's while I watch from my second floor porch to ID any BG's I see leaving the area.

I live in the country on 90 acres of ridge top, every now and then I'll fire a couple out the back door just to check the sights, kill a groundhog what ever, and it is not at all unusual to hear a shot or two from elsewhere on the ridge. Then there are the times someone goes to their "back yard range" and does some real shooting, no one thinks a thing about it here.

I live ~1/4 mile point-to-point from the outdoor range of a gun club (I used to belong there). Thus I hear gunfire every day.

It's music to my ears!

Otherwise we're in a tree-hugger, anti-gun area. Luckily there are almost no events in town that would justify drawing a gun.

At work I'm close enought to the base on range that I hear gunfire almost everyday, Don't think anything of it. In my room, all I can hear are jet engines (my room is pretty close to the flight line). If I were to hear gunfire either here, or at my girlfriend's apartment I would be pretty concerned.

Ah ,yes....jets so loud they completely drown out your stereo....funny how you eventually get so used to it that you don't really even notice them

I live in a pretty busy neighborhood....I hear things that could be gunfire, fireworks, or Harleys backfiring....used to pay attention, but not so much anymore

The strange thing is how used to it you get. I visited my parents last time I was on leave and had trouble getting to sleep when I was there. No jets overhead, it was too quiet.

If I hear gunfire, it’s my wife she woke up before I did and shot the BG
I would be off duty, so I would get my handheld and call an officer buddy to check it out.( and back him up )
