Senate panels OKs broad background checks for gun buys

By David Sherfinski, The Washington Times, Tuesday, March 12, 2013

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday advanced legislation that would require near-universal background checks on all gun sales — a measure that will likely change before the full chamber votes as its Democratic sponsor hunts for bipartisan support.

Judiciary approves gun background checks
By JOHN BRESNAHAN | 3/12/13 10:55 AM EDT Updated: 3/12/13 12:31 PM EDT

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a Democratic bill calling for background checks on all gun sales, which could potentially lead to the biggest change in U.S. gun laws in years.

But the likelihood of the full Senate approving such a bill is slim because of objections from Republicans.

The bill was approved on a 10-8 party-line vote and mandates background checks on all gun purchases and sales, including private transactions. State governments will also be able to tap into a national criminal background check system.

Grassley will make enough noise that this won't pass the full Senate, and so will we. I will, once again, be writing my Senators.

Like wise and am doing so right now

Why when this country is going pot, do they have time for guns when there are far more important issues to settle

I know everyone is tired of hearing this, but it's imperative that you contact your reps and tell them to reject UBC. If you've been holding off on contacting them before, NOW is the time.

Feel free to use this email, tailored to your needs. (I didn't write this. I don't remember from where I got it.)

Dear ______,

I strongly encourage you to oppose the so-called Universal Background Checks (UBC) for gun purchases. On any level, this is a bad idea. It will not achieve its stated objectives and will bring into play many serious abuses against US civil liberties. Please consider the following:

1) The real intent of UBC is to track, control, limit, ration, outlaw many varieties of guns, and ultimately confiscate personally held firearms. Even if that’s not the intention of your Congress, those that follow you can easily change this. Private gun transfers should remain legal and not tracked by any government entity since doing so does not decrease crime. Yet proponents know UBC cannot work without creating a national firearms registry. They will demand national gun registration with attached felonies for non-compliance as they seek to identify, track, and eliminate personal firearms. With this system in place, politicians can "call in" whatever guns, through current political expediency, are determined to be "evil". In this expanded UBC system, criminals, of course, will be unaffected. Law-abiding citizens will be the ones paying the price.

2) We already have a universal background checking system in place: the NICS. All personal information is reported through NICS and approved by checking existing Federal Criminal databases. The vast majority of guns sold in this country go through NICS. Meanwhile, violent criminals do what they've always done: stealing or obtaining their guns through illegal sources. UBC will not affect criminals just as the current system generally does not.

True reduction to gun violence can be accomplished in two simple ways: 1) Strengthen American value systems instead of tearing them down. Support families and their instruction of their children. Not by liberal government educational systems but by families. This WILL reduce gun crime. Good children, taught by loving guardians, grow up to be good people, protecting life not destroying it. 2) Eliminate gun free zones with national legislation. Civilian gun ownership has to be allowed in all reasonable venues to eliminate these mass shootings: schools, shopping areas, churches, stadiums, etc. Immediate armed response by both LE and armed civilians stops these shootings, proven in recent history.

UBC will prove to be catastrophic for America. I truly appreciate your support in defending the Second Amendment and will continually reward you with my support.

Sincerely,

Also noted that Di Frankenstein's bill isn't dead yet... it's scheduled to be talked about in committee on Thursday... according to the same article.

Keep those cards and letters coming folks...
It should never make it all the way through. However the anti gun people will not let up. It will be something else after this round of attacks on our rights. We are so lucky that the republicans have control of the house. All in all what we need to worry abt is a conservative justice retiring while under a socialist POTUS then our 2nd admin. rights will surely be at risk. In a lot of ways we are just like France is with their socialist views of those in power with England thrown in for the icing on the cake.....

There are no republicans that cross the aisle on issues? Hmmm...THIS IS NOT A SLAM DUNK.
I wrote my Senators a letter. Here it is. I hope I got my point and feeling across.

Dear Mrs. Stabenow,

I respectfully write to you with my concerns and the concerns of many others that I am close to in regards to the assaults on our 2nd Ammendment rights. As I am confident that you have received many emails and phone calls from people concerned with the very actions now going on in DC that are aimed at restricting my rights, I wanted to make sure that my voice was heard.

I want to start by saying that the horrific event that took place at Sandy Hook and other mass shootings are just plain saddening and my heart and prayers go out to the families that have endured these loses. I do feel that their pain is compounded by the fact that most of the individuals that carry out these horrendous crimes cowardly take their own lives not allowing the families to feel that they receive justice and closure. It is my belief that justice will be served for those people on judgement day by our Lord and Creator.

However I do not believe at all that for them to feel they got justice that the rights of so many who responsibly and legally own and use firearms should be restricted. I truly believe that there are better ways to combat these horrific events.

I understand that there are four bills right now in the senate that are the centerpiece of the discussions right now. I feel that the assault weapons ban, high capacity magazine ban, universal background checks, and the straw purchasing bills are nothing more than feel good legislation that will do nothing more than restrict the rights of the law abiding. The last assault weapons ban showed absolutely no impact on the reduction of firearms crime. I also thought straw purchasing was illegal. Will it now be more illegal? This will do nothing if the criminals are not prosecuted anyways. I site this because statistics have shown that these prosecutions have dropped under the current administration.

Now the big one that looks to be the closest to getting support is the universal background check. This all sounds well and good but there has been indication from the Democrats working on the bill that they ultimately want a national registry. Under current law this is illegal and I and others that are against the bills believe that registration will ultimately lead to confiscation. This is exactly what happened in other countries.

Now I don't typically consider myself to be a Republican or Democrat. I would probably tend to be more Republican because they seem to as a party whole be more to the protection of my 2nd Ammendment rights as a law-abidding gun owner. I did vote for you in the last election because I believe that you having represented this state for years would know how important these rights are to us here in Michigan and in the United States as a whole.

You have done great things for this state thus far and I commend you for that. I am asking you now to stand up for this great state that you represent and the oath that you took in office to defend the United States Constitution.

This state is counting on you to share our voice.

Respectfully,

Jason Loomis

Done and sent again to all my representatives.
I just sent emails to my Senators. I will call their respective offices tomorrow.
Time to up the ante, again. Keep writing, calling, visiting your reps.

Some get it, even on the Senate panel that voted 10-8 to move the bill forward:

"Mass shootings would continue to occur despite universal background checks," said Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley, the committee's top Republican. "Criminals will continue to steal guns and buy them illegally to circumvent the requirements. When that happens, we will be back here debating whether gun registration is needed. And when registration fails, then the next step is gun confiscation."
Some don't:

"This isn't going to be a perfect bill," said its sponsor, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., acknowledging that it wouldn't end gun violence. "But it will sure reduce crimes."
The fight ain't over, not by a long shot. Hopefully we all get it, by this point:

Awaiting a committee vote Thursday is a proposal by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. That bill is expected to win panel approval but die in the full Senate when the chamber considers gun legislation, probably in April

Yeah this isn't over. But it is more of a common agenda than a common sense laws. They wont say it but a fish is a fish no matter how you decorate it!
