I shot my new ruger P95 9 mm pistol for the first time the other day. I have virtually no experience with semi-autos, only a bit with revolvers. (I am a sporting clays shooter mostly). So my opinions are of almost no value except as they show how an inexperienced guy dealt with a popular and common semi auto.
First, the gun worked flawlessly, with no failures of any sort. The sights seem low to me (i.e. I tended to shoot low) but I may not be using them properly. The 9mm round is not bad at all- the gun is much less punishing to shoot that my 357 revolver, despite weighing less.
It appears very difficult to get a full 10 rounds in the mag- about 8 is my limit. They give you a loading tool, but I am not profiicient with it yet.
The gun is well- made and ergonomically very nice for my hand. The appearance is all business, and it certainly lacks the charm of a blued smith revolver with walnut grips, but of course it is a different sort of weapon. I was able to fire it very rapidly, and keep it mostly on target.
The gun appears to be a bargain, and I like its "made in USA" stamp on the receiver. :biggrin2:
God Bless

One thing about Ruger semiautos is they are way overbuilt for the service cartridges they fire. This can be a good thing or a bad thing.

I'm not surprised you found the P95 ergonomic. It seems like they did a better job on the overall ergonomic design of that model.

Once you get some more familiarity with it at the range, try taking just a basic pistol course with it. I did that last year with the XD and it really helped... a lot of the material was stuff I already knew, but the parts on manual of arms was helpful, and improving trigger control is always good. Learning how to tap rack bang properly is actually pretty easy, you just have to be shown how. Basic pistol classes aren't just for new shooters, they can be good for anyone who is trying to learn a new tool and add it to their skillset.

I don't think I'll ever stop comparing semis in terms of how many revolver features they seem to replicate, but if you work on it you'll get to the point where this counterintuitive tool won't be so awkward any more and that'll get your confidence up.

I am curious however that you are having trouble loading your magazines with the speedloader. I've never known Ruger mags to be exceptionally tight or stiff.

Congrats on the new 95. When I bought my 95 , I had on mag that had a spring that was on the stiff side. It worked itself out after a while. I have the 2 factory 10rd mags that came with the pistol and they are still functioning like new. Aftermarket mags for Ruger auto pistols are not that expensive either.

I love my P95, and for many years it was my "go to" handgun far above anything else that I have. My G19 has sinced inched it out, but the P95 is a winner.

15 round mags are readily available. The spring should loosen with a little usage making it easier to load all of the rounds.

Ya know, you just wrote my first range report for my P-95 two years ago.
You will get used to loading with the speed loader, the spring will settle in a little quicker if you load the mag and just store it that way. In fact, my P-95 mags have been loaded with 10 rounds ever since.

I remember the sights seeming to aim low too. I found it to be a matter of how I learned to shoot the gun. I can't really remember what it was exactly, but an instructor helped me get it straightened out. My wife didn't have the same problem. She shot her first three rounds with it, two in the bulls eye, and one about 1" off the bull eye at 10:00. (Yes Ma-am!) :hand10:

You are off to a great start with a pretty good gun.
ENJOY! :yup:

Ahhhh the good ol' P95. Yes mine is still an enjoyable gun to shoot - built like a brick latrine, solid and fugly!!

I still like that gun and the P97 too - I'd still not feel any problem with carrying mine again even after so long - it will and does eat all food given

Not sure why but some time back I bought a replacement barrel for it - just because someone was selling one - darned if I'll ever have to use it tho!
