When a Carry Gun Fails

Reading about P95's problems with his 226 made me think... if that can happen to a Sig Sauer, any gun can fail! Honestly it doesn't get much better than a SIG, so anything less expensive is probably even more susceptible!

Do you have a designated "fill in" in case something like this happens to you? I do. This is part of the reason I was so happy to trade into another XD40. One breaks, I got another one ready to go. Owning two of my primary carry gun is neat like that.

Granted I stumbled into that by luck.

I also recently picked up some cheap stuff that'll let me carry my 686 if I need to. I'm trying to build a complete carry setup for each of my handguns.

A gun is man made and thus always susceptible to problems. How do you prepare for this? Or are you prepared at all? Not everyone is made out of money and has the cash laying around to pick up a spare pistol.

Small caveat here - some may have seen that my SIG was diagnosed finally - in fact I should have been more savvy and realized sooner the problem. Typical (old) engineer - look for complex and overlook the simple!!

For those who didn't know - the problem was greased rails - seemingly worst for some reason with Militec1 grease and still not good with Tetra.

It was after maybe two or three mags of std pressure that the grease was getting ''sticky'' and continued use only made this worse!!! Talk about slide drag - sheesh!

Last clean was fastidious and relube was Militec1, oil - no grease. Test rounds fired after that (50 perhaps) - 100%. Yesterday IDPA - 120 or so rounds - 100% and today with son - another perhaps 40 to 50 - still runnin like a dream. This was all with American Eagle but I'd have bet even the S&B would have run.

So - no more grease for the 226, that's for sure!!

I carry a Ruger revolver. If it breaks I'll throw chunks of ice because Hell will have frozen over. :)
Any mechanical device can fail... it happens!

If i was a Cop i would deff carry a back up to my primary would be my worst fear to have a gun break or bad guy fighting for it ...
My partner is always tells me stories about how police in West Palm get there buts kicked in a melee, because they are trying to keep BG's from trying to snatch their weapon. Talk about fighting with one arm tied behind your back!

Needless to say he is a advocate for always carrying a bug. Mine is a .38 snubby, caues its so easy to point shoot with.

We talk about malfunction, we practice correction and backup drills, but we need to think about avoiding or preventing what most feel is inevitable, the stoppage during combat. Transition to the backup may not be fast enough unless we're in cover. If we can agree that we should practice with what we carry, and by practicing with it we wear it out, then Euclidian's identical pair should be considered. One for practice and gaming will surely break or stop sooner rather than later, but it can be cleared or repaired at your leisure. The other should be used often, but sparingly, to minimize the worst that could happen.

I figure the more moving parts, the more problems(learned that once I left the Infantry to go to SpecOp's)!
I figure a revolver will be less likely to malfunction than a semi-auto. So I carry my Bodyguard 38 more than any other gun I have. To me, its the most difficult gun I have to shoot effectively, so I practice all the time! Yes it will endure more stress because of the usage, but I believe everything thing needs a break-in period(the shooter getting adjusted/staying effective and the guns moving parts start to tune it's self). I can't afford to have 2 of every carry gun that I own, so I'll shoot it till I see signs!

I had an issue M16(well beat up, but still accurate) that I had to turn in. When I got my new issue, it was brand new(no semi-stainless steel barrel from busting rust being in boat company). Took it to BZO, windage was almost to one side(like 18-20clicks) to get rounds to Zero. Took that thing back to the armory(it was sighted in), and got out a beat up m16. Went to BZO, after I mechanically zeroed it. I took (2 ) 3 shot groups(groups touching each other, but not perfectly centered), adjusted 2 clicks, perfectly centered every shot after.
