I'm probably opening myself up for a beating but.....

There have been lots of threads around states with fewer gun laws have fewer gun related crimes and possibly other types of crimes also. But does the government (at most levels) really want crime to decrease? Look how many people profit / make their livings based on there being crimes.

Future victims. Everybody has potential of being a future crime victim. Crime is not a good thing period. With less gun laws controlling future victims it would decrease crime rate. It would just be better for everyone.

If crime rates dropped, all of society would benefit. It costs a lot of money to to maintain prisons and courts. Some money could possibly be saved with fewer inmates and court expenses, which would (hopefully) result in lower taxes for everyone who pays them.

But then, unemployment in many sectors of the economy would go up. Crime is very good for many businesses.

Quite possible. But on the other hand, perhaps more criminals would be able to find gainful employment if they didn't have a criminal past. Maybe some of them would be inclined to start their own lawful businesses which would reduce unemployment. Hard to speculate on such a thing since it could really go either way.

Maybe a better question is who benefits from high crime.
The government? Gives them an excuse to take and wield more power to keep the people safe. Gives an excuse to raise taxes, too.

Hmmm, politicians make their living by defining major problems that need their tender considerations.

BUT, politicians make CAREERS out of not solving problems and thereby implying to the voters "See how difficult this is to solve? That is why you really, really need us!"

Now that more and more prisons are private and for-profit, good ol' capitalism dictates that the demand for prisoners will go up. Already judges have been indicted for sentencing kids as young as 12 to sentences in private prisons in return for cash. Since cash is king, the private prison barons can keep all the right palms greased to insure a steady stream of profitable inmates for them.

Who profits from crime? The corporations that run the prisons.
