Since the Sandy Hook incident it seems like there are a lot of things our Officials are doing to try to keep the kids and schools safe. Now it seems like my state is doing "something" but the problem I see is that once the shooter is there and shooting, all the LEO's can do is respond and hopefully save some lives and take out the shooter in a hail of gunfire.

It would be better in my opinion to have someone trained inside of the school instead of just the team of responders. But, this will make the people feel better that at least they are making some kind of attempt to make our schools safer.

The jury in my opinion is still out on this.

If they want to immediately make schools and other similar areas safer, they could do so by taking down the gunbuster signs, which mass shooters always seek out.

I think training is always a good thing and I'm glad WV is doing this. Much better than other places that are restricting guns across-the-board and thinking that's the way to make schools safer.

There's no one answer to mass killings, there has to be several approaches. Training helps.

Agreed, Ill take it a step further. Lets put trained volunteers in the schools and watch the school shootings disappear. The Israelis seem to have it worked out.

Why LaPierre didn't announce this suggestion rather than calling for paid security in every school eludes me.

I agree with the OP without sprinkler systems and fire alrms as well as fire drills just training the fire department is not the answer to saving lives in fires.
Why do we train the people who had a policy to surround and wait to SWAT as their policy until recently?

We need to train and practice evacuations and active shooter drills in our schools just like fire drills. Possibly adding exterior doors for egress.

Wire mesh glass instead of safety glass. Wire mesh will break but prevent the shooter from reaching in and unlocking doors.

Comparmentalize schools with doors that double as fire doors and can be automatically closed isolating each section of the school from the other reducing the targets available to the shooter.

There are a 100 different things that can be done with little capitol outlay that would protect students.

We are not serious about protecting children we are serious about taking guns away from citizens there is a difference.

Ask your Chief of police or your Sherriff when was the last time their officers did a tour of the schools and studied the layout of rooms or practiced in the school saving lives. The answer will tell you everything you need to know about are we serious.

It eludes me to. His suggestions were good, but cost prohibited. I would offer my time as well. All this training to pick up the mess is worthless if they are not in the building at the time of an incident.

Instead of merely being on decoration committees, I'm sure a dozen qualified parents would volunteer for escort/chaparone/guard duty for a few hours at the school their child attends. We can put this sort of deterrent force in place across most schools, now, if only we choose to.

Yes sir. The problem is not choosing to, the problem is them (schools) letting us.

Well, that's just it: WE are the masters in our own land, if we'd simply choose to realize it. Deep down, that is indeed the problem, that we don't take charge of our towns, cities, counties, school districts, state legislation and remote hirelings.

Makes it a tough slog when half don't vote, and have of those don't give a damn.

Until we do make that change of realizing our potential control over it all, none of it will change. So long as we continue to see it as "they" being in the way such that we have no choices, nothing will change.

I would say at the very least, lift a restriction that prohibits school staff willing and able to CC and scratch it from the employee handbook. It's better than nothing IMO.

Its good they are training but it doesnt solve anything really. Guy goes in school opens fire. Kids dropping like flies while phone calls are being made then dispatch then response time for LE to get there, figure where the BG is etc etc. Before they can possibly engage.

Armed staff teaches whatever in the school. BG opens fire, they open fire. Almost instant response and in any case well ahead of any possible LE response.
