I have been using two borrowed rifles this season. One is a Marlin 336 in 35 remington and the other is a Savage model 110 in 30-06. The Marlin lever gun shoulders so much nicer, is lighter, and thinner too. Would a youth model Remington or other youth model bolt gun feel more like the Marlin 336? I really need to get out and try these rifles in person, would just like a little guidance from the people in the know.

Proper fit is one of the most important elements in shooting and is hardly ever discussed. I bought a youth model seven for my 11 YO nephew to use this year, he is short for his age, it fits him nicely but will probably only do so for a few years if that long. An AR collapsable stock can be adjusted to many lengths but that is high money for a transitional gun. On a short stock you can easily add a thick butt pad later. The 243 is a great caliber for a youth deer rifle.
