I worked at a Detox center last night, and during one of my admissions assessments I learned something new. I was asking this 19 y/o male who had been brought in by the local PD about his substance abuse history and the kid explained to me that he had been using "powder" by sprinkeling it in his "wig". What this means is that he uses cocaine by putting it in his hair and absorbing it through his scalp for a longer high. It also means that anyone who is handling him could also be absorbing it through their hands, neck, or any mucous membranes can be exposed to cocaine in sufficient quantity to become influenced and show positive on urine drug screenings.

Just for kicks, I scraped his scalp and tested the results with a NIK kit and yep yep it was positive for cocaine.

One of my other patients, who was also brought in by JSO, had been "huffing" paint thinner, spilled some on his clothing and then set himself on fire lighting a cigarrette. I had to shower him, and clean and dress his wound, and then open up all the doors and windows to clear the fumes before I could conduct my assessment.

You guys be careful out there.

The scalp thing is a new one on me, thanks for posting.

There are all kinds of nut case druggies out there. My favorite O/D run I ever had was the guy who took to much viagra, and didn't know what to do. He was all dressed up with no where to go.

"How much blow is he rubbing on his head and when did kids get so much money? "

Thats the dicey part, these folks are coming in for treatment and ALWAYS lie about how much they are using. Depending on there associated diagnoses they will be either exaggerating or minialmizeing their use. So with that in mind this guy was saying that he using an 1/8th of a gram about 4 times a day. The money parts easy, In his case he sold marijuana to pay for his coke. They also steal stuff to sell for coke money.

"Was he wigging out?"

Not like what you'd imagine. Coke useres for the most part are pretty high strung folks anyways. He was more releived to not be going to jail. A big part of the job in detox centers is keeping these guys calm and getting them fed and in bed. The coke, crack and Meth useres go on Runs. This is were they don't eat, or sleep for several days because they've got enough dope to keep them going. Once the dope runs out, or they get picked up, the "crash" happens. He was jittery but we processed him pretty quickly and got him in bed.

Maybe this girl was trying to get high and just forgot to take it out of the baggies?

September 18, 2002

A sixteen year old girl now faces felony possession charges for having 28 rocks of crack cocaine hidden in her hair. A Sheriff’s deputy noticed a baggie “protruding from the back of her hair,” and moved in to investigate. Police are still baffled as to why she was in the court house in the first place. Perhaps she was going where the sinners go. After all, you wont sell too much cocaine in church. Her legal defense seems to be centering around the old “I found it in the bathroom” excuse.

The janitor must have thought they were decorative soaps, and set a dish of crack rocks out for patrons to enjoy.

Back in the mid 90 when I was a Rescue Specialist on a Hovercraft I was treating a young deckhand off of a fishboat, complaining of chest pains similar to a heart attack, he was also coughing up a fair amount of blood, suspected hard drugs by his symptoms, although he claimed only to be using pot. Talked later to our liaison with the Provincial Ambulance Service and he advised me that quite a bit of the pot was laced with rat poison, hence the coughing up of blood.

My dad ran a Heroin halfway house when I was a kid, saw first hand at the age of 8 what drugs do to the human body. My daughter is going to get the same lesson.
