The U.K. is fertile breeding grounds for this type of chaos. It's a worthy lesson to take note of.
I completely agree! I think that the fact that firearms, rifles, knives, pepper spray, batons, tasers or such other self-defense weapons are forbidden to be owned and carried by civilians, just makes matters even worse for civilians. People don't even have the means to defend themselves, their families or their properties.

I'm headed to London next week for 5 nights and I'm a little nervous. To make matters worse, I cannot carry pepper spray, a baton or a decent knife, since the firearms regulation is very tough in the UK. I might have to avoid going out after 10:00PM and avoiding areas in North and South London.
Don't worry about it.

These riots are not in the tourist/visiting areas.
Think of New York and the Bronx for example.
Your hotel staff will be fully able to advise you about where to go/not to go (if there is still trouble next week? - Doubtfull IMHO.)

You will no doubt be just fine and have a good time. - Don't restrict yourself to 10:00 pm. - You'll miss the fun;)

One reason I'm liking the cane. Because of a bad knee I've been carrying and studying the use of defensive fighting with a cane. The more I carry it and train the better I like it. A crook cane would be hard for any government to say no to.

They know for certain that NOTHING will happen to them.
You can't be more wrong. They will get a stern talking to while being looked at with a very cross face. They might even get an "I'm disappointed in you."

Can it happen here? I don't see why not, we have had riots before and even a civil war. Why would now be any different? With our current set of government "leaders" (both sides of the aisle) and our economy and joblessness I don't think it would take a lot to spark some civil unrest. Certain places will squelch it quickly, Texas is one I think it would only last a few hours, and others will act just like the English "leadership" and let it run.

A cane is a useful self defense weapon, but won't really work against multiple assailants without a lot of training... If I could carry nothing else, I would carry a cane.. But, doing so in a state where you can carry a gun, it only interferes with getting to your gun. And frankly, I'd like to stop an assault on my person from a greater distance than 3 feet.

Canes are great, but look a bit out of place with younger people of good health of course. - Unless one 'invents' a limp.
A good sturdy umbrella fits right in within the UK generally.

The UK provides us with a great place to really think about improvised weapons.
A few examples:
The above mentioned cane and umbrella.
A cheap criket bat that you have bought as a souvenier.
A good solid flashlight (surefire type.)
A carabina on one's belt that can be pressed in to service as a knuckle duster very easily.

Carrying folding knives is not prohibited in the UK, as long as the blade doesn't lock, and the blade is less than 3 inches (IIRC?) - This basically permits Swiss Army type knives, and the Spyderco 'UK' folder also.
Larger bladed folders and fixed blades are sold, and are not illegal to keep in your hotel room/home etc. - If you take your favorite knife there and leave it in your hotel room....no problem.
Plus of course, even if you did carry it on a trip, who will even know if you are descreet?

Self Defense is not illegal in the UK, but if you defend yourself in any form, and with/without a weapon of any type and you 'hang around' for the police, then you will be required to explain your actions, and depending on the situation, you might be in trouble. - Best not to 'hang around'.

Just for information:
Despite the semi auto full bore rifle 'ban' in 1988, and the handgun 'ban' in 1996/7, there are more legal firearms these days in the hands of people in the UK, than before the 'bans'.
Shotgun Certificates are "shall Issue" to people with clean background checks and show a secure place to keep the gun(s).
Firearm Certificates (for rifles,) are not TOO difficult to obtain if one can prove hunting and/or target shooting club membership.

Sales of baseball bats are going sky high in the UK.
Oops.. They'll probably ban those next unless you can prove you are a member of a baseball team.

Best thing I can think of is I know a lot of people that shoot and are law abiding citisens, between us there are several hundred pistols and rifles,a few legal Full Autos, and long range precision rifles with several thousand rounds of ammo on hand, and a secure ranch outside the city limits with excellent fields of fire

Lights Out was a great read wasn't it?

London is like most big cities, troubles can be found anywhere
keep your SA up and try to be wise about where you go

UGH. Here are some comments in the Amazon.UK listing for carrying a kubotan
Image

The item itself arrived in perfect condition. It is sturdy and very comfortable to grip. Itss what it says on the tin, but there's a catch...

All the information I found on the Internet suggests that carrying a keyring-kubotan is futile. The moment you use it to defend yourself it becomes a damage inflicting weapon and you become a criminal (and can be prosecuted as such). The only scenario where you can legally use a kubotan outside your home is: "comming back from/going to martial arts training (in use of a kubotan), you were attacked and could only respond with equal force by making use of a kubotan". Anything else is interpreted as: "you were carrying an object that has an obvious use as a weapon"; it's basically the same (in the eyes of the law) as buying a spiked baseball bat with a small loop that holds keys. This should be clearly mentioned on the product page. You do not have to believe me, do your own research.

If you are a skinny/weak guy like me, the best advice in self-defence I can give is: learn to run faster, scream louder and avoid leaving your home.
In response someone wrote:

Section 1 of the prevention of crime act (1953) deals with offensive weapons.

(1) Any person who without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, the proof whereof shall lie on him, has with him in any public place any offensive weapon shall be guilty of an offence, and shall be liable
(a) on summary conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or a fine not exceeding ÂŁ200, or both;
(b) on conviction on indictment, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding four years or a fine not exceeding one hundred pounds, or both.

(3) A constable may arrest without warrant any person whom he has reasonable cause to believe to be committing an offence under subsection (1) of this section, if the constable is not satisfied as to that person's identity or place of residence, or has reasonable cause to believe that it is necessary to arrest him in order to prevent the commission by him of any other offence in the course of committing which an offensive weapon might be used.

(4) In this section "public place" includes any highway, or in Scotland any road within the meaning of the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 and any other premises or place to which at the material time the public have or are permitted to have access, whether on payment or otherwise; and "offensive weapon" means any article made or adapted for use for causing injury to the person, or intended by the person having it with him for such use by him or by some other person.

Since a Kubotan is MADE as a pressure point weapon and has only one purpose, even if disguised as a keyring, IT IS AN OFFENSIVE WEAPON.

Carrying a Kubotan in any place which is not a dwelling will be an offence. If you are stopped and searched by a police officer, you may very well be arrested and charged with the offence of possession of an offensive weapon (Max Penalty 4 years and/or a fine)

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE IT OR INTEND TO USE IT FOR THE OFFENCE. TO BE COMMITTED! However, you may have a defence if you can provide (and prove) a reasonable excuse for having it.
It's horrible to see law abiding citizens treated like criminals just because they are trying to defend themselves.

Let's not allow this to happen to us in the USA.

probably the best SD cane out there
City Stick : Walking Sticks (Cold Steel)
Cold Steel do make good canes, but I see that the crook does have its place in the fight also. I therefore have and carry a Cane Masters cane. While I don't have the training for all the locks and throws being able to cause pain with hooks and grabs while in close appeals to me. Do I want to be that close? No but a fight is what a fight is.

My post was for times like London where firearms are not allowed.

As to not really working against multiple assailants without lots of training. Would you rather have something of some use or nothing at all?

But, doing so in a state where you can carry a gun, it only interferes with getting to your gun. I have found that one can drop or toss the cane to the side and not slow the draw by much if at all.

And frankly, I'd like to stop an assault on my person from a greater distance than 3 feet. If I had a choice so would I, but again the fight will be what it is. So it is best to train to stop the fight at whatever the distance should turn out to be and by what means available.

With what training I have can I stop a fight with the use of a cane? I don't know but I will put some hurt on those who try. And to me that is all any of us can do, do the best we can at the time and place that it happens. But what ever you do don't give up.

I try to live by the rule: The Brave Only Die Once, While The Coward Dies Many Times.

I do think wide spread riots are coming to USA, so far, we've only had localized riots. Its only a matter of time IMO.
This is what I believe also!!!!

It could be sooner than we think!!!!!!

Some here may be too young to remember the "burn baby burn" days of the 1960s. We've had this stuff big time....more than just a bit of localized rioting. "Coming sooner than we think"? It's already come and gone and could easily come again. It ain't pretty.

It's coming and it's just a matter of time. Low wage hourly production type jobs will continue to migrate overseas. Nothing will prevent that other than draconian laws that would only impede our economy in the end. The unemployed will be the young, the uneducated, and the minorities. They will also be the ones feeling the pressure from the immigrant population competing for the few low skill and unskilled labor jobs that remain. At some point, all those spending cuts that Washington is ballyhooing are going to kick in. When the food stamps, unemployment benefits, etc are treated to the budget axe, many of the recipients will express their displeasure by trashing their neighborhoods. From there, they will move into the nicer neighborhoods. The gangs will mostly be young and minorities. They will organize with social networking sites. As the rioting spreads others may join in to take advantage of the situation, but the primary perpetrators will be under thirty years of age. Unlike London, many of ours will be carrying weapons. Having grown up on a steady diet of violent movies and video games, they will shoot you and not give it a second thought.

After watching the news reports as well as videos and photos about the riots, I chose to cancel my trip to London and instead will be heading to Cardiff, Wales. The riots are getting worse and have now extended to other cities like Liverpool, Bristol, and Manchester. I just don't feel like risking my family's life and especially during a vacation that is supposed to be about fun and relaxation. If I wanted to be stressed out about my safety I would go to the Middle East. The airlines and hotels were kind enough to refund my payments and helped me arrange new bookings. Oh well, perhaps later on after things cool down.
