On shooting shows on TV I often see some type of target where when shot it makes a big colorful blast in the paper, such as a black target that when shot leaves the hole where the bullet goes trough as well as a yellow blast around the hole.. Like this

Is there a name I can use for these if I were to look up targets online that do this?

Here are a couple of places that sell various items: Optics Planet; Brownell's; Tactical Store; Palmetto State Armory.

That should get you started. Once you get a variety of target brands/models, you can do a Google search to find several others.

I tend to use the Caldwell 1", 3", 5" and 8" targets out to 300yds. The Champion VisiColor units are nice, and they have some quite large ones. Birchwood-Casey makes the Shoot-n-See line of targets. Dirty Bird is another maker of this sort of "splattering" target.

Wal-Mart usually has them pretty cheap as has been said above. I like using them when I practice shooting without my prescription glasses (like I'd probably end up doing against a middle of the night intruder.) Even being near sighted, I can make sure my rounds are staying on target with those. Shoot-n-c are the ones I use.
