I picked up another Browning BLR yesterday, this time chambered in 300 wsm. It weighs about a half lb more than the 358 win, just under 8 lbs with a Leupold VX-Freedom 3×9. The wsm has an aluminum reciever and a 2 inch longer barrel at 22 inches, it also has a half cock with a hammer safety. The 358 win feels much handier, less cumbersome, and better balanced. Both are wearing the same glass and rings/mounts.

My friend and I went to the local Sheriff's Office range this morning. The sun was out and was plenty warm compared to the last few weeks at 25f. We were only able to shoot out to 85 yards due to snow drifts. I was shooting Norma's 180 gr Bond Strike ammo. I had a crappy shooting position, I had to double up the front bags so I could get the stock in a somewhat non punishing position while shooting prone at 85 yards. The Blr was grouping just over an inch, I will wait till spring when the 1200 yard range opens up before I see how it really shoots.

For recoil the 300 wsm kicks like a fully loaded 30-06 out of a featherweight, it's not bad, but you dont want to shoot it all day. I tested out a magnetospeed for the first time and showed a velocity of 2909 fps average. It was a short range trip, and at $2.50 per trigger pull, the remaining 82 rounds of ammo could be used more effectively. I am going to save the brass and eventually figure out a load. You can push the cartridge a lot harder than the factory ammo, but the question is do I really want to?

Beauties!!
BOTH Excellent cartridges.
Its a shame the 358 isn't more popular. WAY better by the numbers than the 45-70, and nearly compares to the .308 and '06, and can damn near do what the .300 win mag and 338 win mag, without the sore shoulder.

People get too caught up on velocity, find a consistent load and learn your gun. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a black bear or elk at 300 yards with the 358 win.
