This is desperately needed! We have one ice breaker that is capable of supporting scientific research in Antarctica and that was put into service in 1976. We have a couple of other smaller breakers that are suitable for the Arctic.
We have new design polar ice breakers on the drawing board and I think preliminary contracts have been issued but we need something to hold us over until they come on line in a few yrs, 5 I think.
